The Perfect Lexington Breeders’ Cup Weekend: Horse Farms, Bourbon and the Races

Plan your Lexington weekend

7 min read Kentucky Legacy Tours

Lexington calls itself the Horse Capital of the World, and Breeders’ Cup weekend is when it proves the title. With the World Championships coming to Keeneland on October 30–31, 2026, thousands of visitors will build entire trips around the two race days — and the ones who plan well will remember far more than just the racing.

Everything worth doing sits within about an hour of downtown Lexington: roughly 450 Thoroughbred farms, the classic distilleries of the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, and Keeneland itself. Arrive Thursday and spend the afternoon on a private Thoroughbred farm tour, standing beside Kentucky Derby winners and watching foals in the paddocks.

Friday, run the Central Bourbon Tour in the morning — Woodford Reserve on Glenn’s Creek, Buffalo Trace in Frankfort, Four Roses and Wild Turkey along the Kentucky River — then head to Keeneland for Future Stars Friday, the two-year-old championship card. Because your chauffeur handles the drive between distilleries and delivers you straight to the gate, nobody has to choose between enjoying the tastings and staying sharp for the races.

Saturday is the main event: nine Grade I races culminating in the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic. Dress the part, arrive at the gate rather than a distant lot, and let the tailgating supplies ride with you on the van. When the last race is done and forty thousand people head for their cars, your chauffeur is waiting in the same spot to take your group to dinner or back to the hotel.
